About me
Dr. Demian Hommel is a passionate educator, researcher, innovator, and mentor, who approaches his work with a great mind, curiosity, kindness, and a humble spirit.
Demian’s graduate studies at the University of Oregon leveraged social theory, ecology, and mixed methods to better understand the vulnerability of coastal communities in Southeast Asia to the dynamics of environmental and political change. At Oregon State University, Demian is continuing his scholarship in deepening his understanding of the intersections between political ecology, vulnerability, adaptability, and equity to climate and other environmental changes. Demian offers courses ranging from introductory human and cultural geography to upper-division regional and thematic courses and is committed to excellence in teaching through evidence-based instruction, innovation, and genuine care and connection with students.
His students described him as “best professor, engaging and fun, kind, respectful, furthered my love in the subject, accommodating, responsive, down-to-earth, hilarious, a great human being.”
Demian was awarded Top Hat’s Most Innovative Educator in March 2020.
